Hello! I’d like to welcome you to the site for my hobby and small business!

My name is Katie and I started Selvage, Bias & Grain over 10 years ago when I was a student at Michigan Technological University in Houghton, MI. I’m originally from East Lansing, MI and as a child I was very creative and loved hobbies such as painting, drawing, crochet and loom beading.

It wasn’t until early college that I had the opportunity to flex my creative muscles AND get paid for it. I worked a summer in the alterations department of a bridal salon where I beaded wedding gowns after they had been altered.

When I left for Michigan Tech, I felt the need for a hobby. So I went to Walmart and bought some cheap fleece and downloaded a free bunny plush pattern online. This was just before my first date with my husband (a Tech alumni) and he still has that very first bunny plush I made.

Once I started making more stuffed animals, my mom suggested I get a sewing machine to help. Up until that point, I had been hand-sewing all my items. Now she had tried a couple of times when I was younger to teach me how to use her machine, and it never stuck. So she bought me my first sewing machine and I taught myself.

I began my Etsy page in 2011 and started selling stuffed animals. In that first year, I sold animals all over the world! By the time I left Michigan Tech, I had stretched into sewing small bags and wallets as well. We moved to St. Louis, MO and during this time I began working at an embroidery shop. This is where I found an appreciation for embroidery machines and my mom gave me a Pfaff embroidery machine. I started making pop-culture themed custom purses and small bags, one of which has been featured on Buzzfeed.

These days, I enjoy bag-making, quilting and coming up with unique quilted items. Feel free to reach out to me with any questions regarding my products, a custom item, or if you have a sewing-related question :)

Thanks for visiting and I hope you find something you like!
